This inde point-and-click survival horror serie from developer Scott Cawthon took the internet by storm back in August of 2014, when video after video flooded YouTube with people playing the game and screaming at the jumpscares.
The game takes place in a fictional pizza restaurant inspired by Chuck E. Cheese's, where the player takes on the role as the night-shift security guard, and must defend themself from the malfunctioning
and murderous animal animatronics, that roam the restaurant halls at night, only armed with acces to security cameras to track their movements and a control switch to open and close the door to your room.
Five Nights at Freddy's was praised by critics for its unique take on the survival horror genre, with a particular emphasis on the game's simplistic design, along with how its gameplay mechanics and aesthetics contributed to an overall feeling of fear and paranoia. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 released November 10, 2014 and Five Nights at Freddy's 3 on March 2, 2015, giving us the totality of the franchise over the span of only 7 months.
Now The Holywood Reporter reports that an adaptation of the game will be produced by Roy Lee (who is currently producing the upcoming Poltergeist remake) of Vertigo Entertainment, along with KatzSmith Productions’ Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, after Warner Brothers picked up the rights to the franchise.
Seth Grahame-Smith said this to The Holywood Reporter:
"We're looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie. The movie is still without a director, writers and cast.
The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to."
